Window rendering in Microsoft windows

How exactly is window rendering accomplished in Microsoft Windows? Specifically, what hardware does the rendering? I have observed that actions that require adjustment of the screen's state -- such as dragging windows, cause jumps in GPU usage, and that on a computer without a GPU, or with an undetected GPU, the CPU is used for rendering.

Is this the whole truth? And where is the 'canvas' -- if you will, of any given window stored; is there someway to avoid doing a BITBLT?
