how to use iconutil on mac to genrate icns file

i have create a directory called with the icon set extension and put there some png file after typing the below comande i have been unable of generating icon files.

mkdir myicon.iconset $ iconutil -c icns myicon.iconset $ Failed to generate ICNS. $
